The Star Rating of roads, like cars, measures their in-built safety. The three top performing countries in the EU have now all set goals to improve the safety of their national road networks to 3-star standard or better by 2020.

Since EuroRAP’s European Road Safety Atlas was first presented in 2011, there has been extensive road inspections carried out across 15 countries further extending the network inspected. Star Rating results are now available on 86,000 km of Europe’s main roads.

This status update provides Star Rating maps across 24 countries giving results for more than a quarter of the main road and motorway network in these countries.

The results are varied between countries. In the countries of Eastern Europe it is common for the Star Rating of even motorways to be lower than strategic single carriageway networks in Western Europe. The safety of busy regional roads needs urgent attention everywhere in Europe.
